Born in the 80's, live in the 2000's

I have been bit by love this winter, yes, but that has not stopped me from going out and finding new joys to enjoy. For one I’m enjoying this resurgence of ideas! Fashion did not die in the 80’s; everyone was just drugged up on coke so it made it all more ‘lively,’ not to mention that sex was the greatest trend of that generation.

Although the years have changed, innovation hasn’t. Today there are new technologies embarked upon in fashion, daily. Just last year the geniuses over at Fendi figured out how to combine gold into fur (I had the honor of touching one of those fur confections and it felt just as soft as a fur that was made without it, brilliant). Or, how about Dolce and Gabanna offering a line of cosmetics, just out this year, a first for the company and now Tom Ford is in the process of securing investors for a rtw women’s collection. That’s enough to close down the House of Gucci alone. Hehehe.

With innovation there are the innovators. Beyonce waking industry great Thierry Mugler for her I Am… Tour, Lady GaGa preciously whoring the fashion industry, will feature in Vogue’s December issue...

Now on to Beth ditto jarring the fashion world into a frenzy to have her charisma and style, partnered with Evans UK, Topshop’s “big” sister brand, and did a collection for women with great figures such as hers.

With all this being said the moral of my rant is this: Stop dressing like you’re apart of a dying (dead) day; the 80’s, and take hold of what’s new in fashion, excite yourself in what is yet to come. I’m willing to actually come out, you be willing to change the way you present yourself. Sometimes more is more.

P.S. Oh yea, and do it all wrong. Wear shorts and a fur chubby in freezing weather. Wear cream at night! Read a book and forego the coke. Make this (our) generation one to remember. Hoorah to the 2000’s!!!!!!!!!!!

Fashion For-Word: It's Cold! Have FUN!!!!! By D. Morris

I happened to have found myself a little bored on this chilly evening in NYC, so instead of doing a post on the obvious functional item of choice for this weather, a winter coat, I decided to check out AA (American Apparel) to see what apparel and accessory options they have churned up in their LA factories. I always have fun when shopping AA and when there are dreary days ahead I look to brighter side of my closet. Sometimes I feel a little uninspired by AA’s offerings in some of their locations. But, when you have a strong merchandising presence, one cannot expect for every item to be available to every location. I know where the goods are though, the NET! I hope you like.

(1) Sheer Solid Stripe Panty Hose

It seems that ever since Chanel released their two-tone tights that came in Black and Ivory as well as Black Lace and Black color-ways many more accessible fashion brands have been swift to recognize the leg in major ways. Just look at the super uber trend, the legging. I hated those at first but now look at the innovation. These beauties aren’t available for purchase as of yet but look out for them.

(2) Velvet Floppy Bow

This little darling makes me smile with schoolgirl glee (literally). Seemingly inspired by the Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton Bunny Ears that were showcased in his Fall 2009 Collection for the luxury fashion house, these velvet sweeties are a little less dramatic but add a subtle flair to the coif! Hope to see you in these head bangers, only $22 at www.americanapparel.com

(3) ARISTOCEG
 Aristocrat Eyeglass

Sun/eyeglass design is increasingly heading towards wearing an entire junkyard on your face. I love all the new aesthetics in garb for the eyes but nothing beats out the streamlined look of a classic. These 70’s inspired specs include nonprescription clear lenses that can be filled with a prescription by your optometrist. The frames are of optical quality so you can look forward to getting a great wear out of these. Sold for $65 on www.AmericanApparel.com

(4)
Sheer Luxe Cut-Out Pantyhose

I love these bottom-less panties. They are just so wrong in the right way. Only to be flashed from a short skirt (if you ask me) these girls are sure to shock everyone in sight! I remember when these surfaced on AA as a possible release. Thank god that they did. I love how they make you ponder, how to wear these without looking like Howard Stern circa the 1992 Video Music Awards? Have fun girls! Only $28 on www.AmericanApparel.com

(5)
Winter Jacket

HOORAY HOORAY HOORAY! AA has outerwear for winter! I love pea coats and all the other wintry staples but personally give me a nice parka or snorkel any day. At times I like for my outfittings to have a certain “static”, not too put together a look (We will get into “static” in a later post) and a nice parka helps me to achieve such. I like how this version of the classic is slightly shorter in length than previous versions and I love the drawstring waist. Of course this version is unisex so those on both sides of the sexual persuasion can look forward to enjoying it for winter. $157 on www.AmericanApparel.com

Get Dressed…. By any Street Necessary! By D. Morris

Get Dressed…. By any Street Necessary!

SO when do you dress your best? Be it for a job interview, club opening, the local “All White/Black Party,” or for Halloween? Do you ever dress to impress yourself?

This week I want to touch on the issue of under-dressing. When I am home in Baltimore I constantly find myself underwhelmed by our “street fashions.” By “street fashions,” I’m referring to how I see local individuals dress when they’re on the streets in transit to school, the mall, the grocery store, or wherever, on the daily I see no daring exposure of great fashion. What I do see is great function, the sweat pant, the ugly UGG boot, the ponytail, and dowdy little North Face fleece things. I never understand that. When will we look in the mirror and say, ‘Today I will impress me?”

I ask this because Baltimore is dying to have a fashion scene but what’s a scene without fashion? Boring and dilute as we already are. I write this foreword from the Bolt Bus as I await my departure from NYC and the one thing I notice here is how daring all things fashion are. Bad fashion is coordinated. Good fashions are breath taking and all in all everyone is an individual.

About a week ago I asked a friend of mine, ‘why is it that every time I see you, you look the same? Where are all of the new things you purchase (mind you he calls me from the mall daily)? He replied, ‘where am I wearing them to?’ Just as I told him I will ask all of you WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU WAITING FOR, Tea with the Queen? That’s not going to happen any time soon so do this, LIVE extraordinary, be exuberant, inspire instead of being inspired by and never look to your right or left. Look forward into the mirror. That person staring back at you is who you are impressing today!

P.S. Personally I would hate to parish and there be clothes with tags left in my wardrobe

Shine on Ladies/ Where to Shop By: Abdu Beau' Ali

Shine on Ladies!!!

Shine Collective Boutique is an utterly fabulous fashion abode impounded with chic and stylish threads nestled in Hampden, Baltimore. Owned by the lovely Melissa and Jamie who have been working very hard to make Shine an exclusive and trendy place to shop, the boutique’s racks of clothes are embedded with a retro essence and underlined with a vintage flare. I fell in love with the dresses that had vibrant movement and an attractive print in there in which I bet girls would have a war over. And guys don’t fret they also have a nice selection t-shirts, that I have to say is simply cute. Eclectic jewelry is Shine’s stand out it, a must have and can be certainly be a girl’s best friend. The treasure chest of jewels at Shine is vast from having earthy stone bracelets to hard core leather flower shaped earrings. While exploring the racks one has the pleasure of viewing passionate art which scatters across the walls of the boutique as they love to give local artist an outlet to luster. They also celebrate the artist work by having an open party for everyone to come see the artwork which is usually the first Friday. Trust me when I say the store is nothing but fab and I live and love the owners as well as their swank sensibility in merchandising and decor. Stop in and take a gander, you will not be disappointed.

Fashion Fore-word by D. Morris. Fashion Writer

A few of my friends and I have been having an ongoing dialogue about Baltimore and the ever elusive FASHION! Fashion in Baltimore has been on hiatus some would say, but I see that Betty here is trying to change that.
Of the debate, Baltimore vs. Fashion, my cohorts and I constantly battle over what is Baltimore fashion, what does it symbolize, who is the Baltimore woman, And who sets the trend? Is Baltimore original in its fashion presence?
After so many constant debates over this topic I began to think what is it that Baltimore offers to fashion. True, I don’t always see the greatest originality in dress here but I will say this, I do see personality. The problem with most, Baltimore and beyond, is that we are all trying to be so “original.” Well riddle me this, ‘what is originality?’ In the least not many can be original as the old saying goes, “there is nothing new under the sun,” but we can all be personal. Instead of being inspired when dressing, dress for you. So often you see a parade of clones stomping through the streets of Baltimore in similar looks all because they saw the next person with an item on and thought, “I would look cute in that.” Guess what, there is a lack of originality because there are no original thoughts. Original thoughts come from personal ideas and personal ideas come from inside you and what you feel. If it’s rainy out and I feel grey, I wear something steely and accompany it with tones that suit the season, if I want to feel powerful I wear a boot, etc. Basically dress for you in the most personal sense. Be who you are through your clothing. Capitalize on your personality and and originality will ensue. Clothes are made to be worn, are your clothes wearing you?
Here’s to more PERSONAL outfittings!
